Aklilu in Ethiopia

Sometimes we never know how God turns our sadness into happiness or our questions into answers. What had happened in Aklilu’s family that made their sorrowful situation full of questions turn into joy? Aklilu’s mother Bekelech had two children from different fathers but was not married. Because of her infidelity, she was isolated and discriminated against by her family and the community. The isolation got worse when she gave birth to a child with clubfoot.

Bekelech was alone and did not know what to do or where to go to help her daughter’s feet. During this challenging time, Bekelech’s uncle passed away. At his funeral, her prayers were answered when one of her aunts who lived in Addis Ababa saw Aklilu’s feet. She gave guidance and said, “this can be cured, and we shouldn’t waste any time blaming the mother.” They journeyed to Addis and started Akilu’s treatment at a Hope Walks partner clinic.

During their stay at Hope Walks-Ethiopia, they were amazed by the treatment and the fact that it was free. After several cast appointments, Aklilu’s feet began to straighten. While Aklilu was in treatment, Hope Walks offered parent advisors for his mother. There she was educated on clubfoot and the treatment process. This reassured Bekelech that it wasn’t the wrath of God punishing her for her wrongdoing.

Now Aklilu is in the brace stage of his treatment, bringing so much joy to his family. Bekelech said, “Even though we were sad about our uncle’s death, I came to understand that if not for this event that brought my aunt for a visit, Aklilu would be left untreated and disabled for the rest of her life. I don’t understand the situation clearly, but I know God turned my sorrow into joy, and I am very thankful for that.”

And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose Romans 8:28. Only God knows how to turn all things for our own good. Hope Walks-Ethiopia is very happy Bekelech found her peace for her and her family.
